nights such as these

Friday, August 22, 2014

for as long as i can remember, my grandparents have been taking me to this dairy queen. it's not the nearest dairy queen or even ice cream shop for that matter, to our house by any means. yet this one is where we always end up. i myself, kind of like our tradition. i mean, this little place has character. it has ummph. and it holds memories.

i remember when i was a young girl, during the summertime, my grandpa would invite me and whoever else was home to go get ice cream with him. we'd hop into his old, beat up pick-up truck. the gear shift was long and knobby and it usually rested between my dirty knees, since i was the smallest and has to be squished in between the driver and passenger seats. it was always the bumpiest ride and i usually laughed because it tickled my tummy. when we got to the dairy queen, my grandpa would order one banana split for him and one for me. i may have been little, but believe you me- i ate the entire thing. sometimes, it's those simple moments that stick with you forever, you know?

the other night, my grandparents and i were canning some bread and butter pickles. i was in charge of mixing the ingredients and bringing them to a boil-- the vinegar concoction burnt my nose and our whole house smelled kind of like an armpit until we opened the doors and windows to let some fresh air circulate. the end result is, of course, worth it though. when we were finally done with canning, my gramps wanted to bring some fresh veggies from our garden to the owner of the dq. plus, grams and i wanted ice cream, so it was a win-win. we hopped in the car, rolled the windows down, and listened to a radio station that played hey jude by the beatles. i've always loved that song and now i think i will think of our little trip to get ice cream every time i hear it. it's funny how certain sounds and smells can bring you swooping back to different places in time, isn't it?

i know someday i'll look back on memories such as these, and i'll smile because life is so very good-- and i am such a lucky girl to be this loved... and to also have spontaneous nighttime ice cream trips with the most wonderful people.
